Dual Delight Sausage Balls: Classic & Eastern Fusion

July 25, 2023

During the holiday season, sausage balls become a cherished indulgence for many! It’s that special time when we set aside our usual health commitments to revel in some festive treats. And while sausage balls might not typically top the list of health foods, there’s undeniable magic in savoring them during this time. Think of it as a delightful holiday deviation from our standard dietary courses. Isn’t that the best kind of rebellion?

The inception of this delightful recipe wasn’t my brainchild, but was shared by an overseas reader, a big fan of our platform. Growing up, sausage balls were the star of his holiday spread. Intrigued by his description, I took it upon myself to master the classic version: a simple blend of sausage, biscuit mix, and—wait for it—a generous dose of cheese. One bite was enough for me to be instantly smitten! It was love at first taste.

Taking things a step further, I embarked on a culinary adventure to add an oriental touch. Injecting flavors like Sriracha, garlic, ginger, scallions, and sesame seeds, the Asian-inspired version was born. Daryl, our reader, here’s a shoutout to you for the brilliant idea! Let’s dive in, shall we?

Classic Sausage Ball Delight:

Ingredients:

  • ½ lb. fresh pork sausage (casings removed)
  • 1 cup preferred biscuit/pancake mix (like Bisquick)
  • 8 oz. cheddar cheese, grated

Eastern Fusion Sausage Balls:

Ingredients:

  • ½ lb. ground pork
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • ½ tsp freshly grated ginger
  • ¼ cup scallions, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha sauce
  • 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 cup preferred biscuit/pancake mix (like Bisquick)
  • 8 oz. cheddar cheese, grated

Instructions for Both Varieties:

  1. Set your oven to preheat at 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine all the listed ingredients. Once the mixture is well-combined, shape them into petite balls and lay them out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Place in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until you see a beautiful golden hue on them.

Pro Tips

Both recipes can make around 30 mouth-watering sausage balls. Perfect for family gatherings, these can also be frozen post-baking. When craving hits, simply reheat at 350°F for a mere 10 minutes, and you’re good to go!
