CHEESY PARKER HOUSE ROLLS
Make your own parker house rolls at home with this simple recipe that is cheesy, delicious, and fail-proof!
WHAT EXACTLY ARE PARKER HOUSE ROLLS?
They were named after the Parker House Hotel in Boston, where they were first made in the 1870s.
According to folklore, an old hotel baker is said to have put an incomplete tray of rolls into an oven.
Following countless magazine images of flawlessly baked, golden brown and soft Parker House Rolls that were hot out of the oven, I’ve always wanted to build my own version of the rolls.
Making my own rolls appeals to me much.
CHEF’S INSIGHTS:
- To ensure that the rolls are all the same size, weigh the dough.
- Spreading butter is unnecessary. They’re delicious as they are, but butter always enhances the flavor.
- Adding parmesan cheese to the rolls is optional, but it enhances the rolls’ flavor and appeal.
After salting and buttering the rolls, reheat them for 7-10 minutes at 350°F in the oven.
Place the dough balls in a parchment-lined baking tray, wrap them in plastic wrap, and then freeze. You may keep them in the freezer for three months.

INGREDIENTS:
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 oz. of active dry yeast
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1 cup of finely grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
- ½ cup of warm water
- ¼ cup of sugar
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Bring a small saucepan of milk to a simmer over medium heat. Leave to cool after you’ve added the melted butter and sugar to the pan. Set aside for 15 minutes to allow foaming, then add the yeast to a warm water solution.
- In a mixer containing a dough hook attachment, mix the milk mixture, eggs, yeast mixture, salt, and half of the flour until a dough forms. Use medium-low speed for mixing.
- Gradually add the remaining flour and mix until a ball forms. You can combine everything and use your hands to form the dough instead of using a stand mixer.
- Toss the dough into an oiled bowl and cover it. Plastic wrap or a kitchen towel can be used as a cover.
- Allow rising for about one hour in a warm location until it has doubled in size.
- Flour a clean working surface with a little cornstarch. Cut each piece of dough into 16 equal pieces, and then roll each piece into a crescent roll.
- Place the rolls in a pan (9″x13″) that has been sprayed with cooking spray. For 30 minutes, let the rolls rise, covered once more.
- Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. Melt the butter and sprinkle the Parmesan over the rolls’ tops. At this point, they should be golden brown and crispy.
